“…regardless of how they use privacy settings, teens must grapple with who can see their profile, who actually does see it, and how those who do see it will interpret it” (32).
“Online, there’s no way to change the conversation, both because it’s virtually impossible to know if someone is approaching and because the persistent nature of most social exchanges means that there’s a record of what was previously said” (33).
“Most people are uncomfortable with the idea that their worlds might collide uncontrollably, and yet, social media makes this dynamic a regular occurrence” (36).
danah boyd’s first chapter in Its’s Complicated, has a varied of different ideas and exposes many things related to social media accounts. I found it interesting the idea of the “digital persona” within different social media accounts because this is a point I can recognize within others accounts as well as my own. There is definitely a persona that is developed within the things you post and this persona can then be interpreted in both positive and negative ways. This is another thing that I found interesting within her chapter, many people are viewing a lot of your social media accounts and the way you present yourself is important in a variety of ways, like she later discusses. This chapter puts into consideration your role in your social media accounts, the digital persona that your are developing, and the possibly of causing a misinterpretation of activity within social media.
